Abstract

With recent prominent advances in orthopaedic procedure and oncologic treatment of terminal cancer patients, it is generally agreed that aggressive treatment should be undertaken for patients with pathologic fracture. We treated 55 pathologic or impending pathologic fractures in 50 patients from April, 1989 to September, 1996. The most frequent site of pathologic fracture in the long bone was the femur(37 cases, 68%), and followed by humerus(15 cases, 27%), tibia(2 cases), and ulna(1 case). Also, the main primary cancers were lung(15 patients, 30%), breast (7 patients, 14%), and liver(7 patients, 14%). The result of postoperative pain relief status was graded as fair to excellent in 37 patients (74%) and the postoperative ambulatory status of pathologic (impending) fractures(37 cases) in lower extremity was evaluated and weight bearing with support to full weight bearing was possible in 26 cases (70%).
